Understanding starts
with a clear explanation.

I’m Thiago Borges, an independent mathematics tutor based in Rio de Janeiro. I teach in fluent English and Portuguese, supporting students following British and American curricula and those studying advanced secondary mathematics.

My focus is on making the reasoning clear: where a method comes from, when to use it and how to apply it independently. Explanations and practice are adapted to each student’s level and objectives.

How I teach

Work through the why.
Then the how.

Lessons respond to what the student needs to understand, practise and do next.

  1. 01

    Find the starting point

Discuss the course and objectives, examine current work and identify gaps in prerequisite knowledge.

  2. 02

    Make the reasoning visible

Explain difficult concepts from first principles, breaking down each step and connecting it to familiar ideas.

  3. 03

    Apply it to real questions

Work through exercises and exam-style questions. Compare approaches and practise choosing an appropriate method.

  4. 04

    Review, refine and practise

Examine mistakes, revisit uncertain steps and use structured practice between lessons when appropriate.

Who I work with

Support where it’s needed.
Challenge when it’s time.

  • Secondary-school students following demanding curricula
  • Students preparing for university mathematics
  • Standardized-test and exam candidates
  • Students rebuilding essential foundations
  • Students ready for more challenging mathematics
Two languages. The same clarity.

Mathematics in English.Matemática em português.

Lessons can be conducted completely in English, completely in Portuguese, or using both when useful. Work with the language of your course while asking questions in the language that helps you understand.
